Rehabilitation of the physically challenged - IBR
Vikas Bhavan is an institution for the rehabilitation of Physically handicapped persons situated in Tora, Bargarh, in the state of Orissa. It started functioning from 29th June 1995. It has a building measuring 22,000 square feet plinth area. It has five dormitories, a physiotherapy unit, an orthotic & prosthetic workshop, kitchen, dinning hall etc. A student normally stays for a period of 5 years in Vikas Bhavan. During this period the students are provided excellent facilities for physical and psychological rehabilitation and primary schooling.

The children are provided physiotherapy every day. Children are also provided disability correcting aids like calipers, crutches and splints manufactured in our orthotic workshop. Corrective surgery is performed in Catholic Mission Hospital situated close to Vikas Bhavan. The students of Vikas Bhavan do their primary schooling in an integrated school situated at a distance of 2 kilometers with able bodied children. The physical and psychological rehabilitation achieved by most of the students during their stay in Vikas Bhavan is almost incredible. The students who come to Vikas Bhavan are not only physically disabled but most of them are psychologically handicapped. The concern, care, affection and acceptance they receive in the institution help them cope with their problems of social ostracism and ridicule. The spontaneous smiles which light up the faces of the children amidst so much of physical suffering bears eloquent testimony to the level of psychological rehabilitation achieved in Vikas Bhavan. Many children who come to Vikas Bhavan is hardly able to move. Sixteen inmates who have left Vikas Bhavan are continuing their schooling is sufficient testimony to the level of physical rehabilitation achieved during their stay in Vikas Bhavan.

Vikas Bhavan runs a one year vocational training programme in tailoring and embroidery.
